WEEKLY PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS 01: RAW VS. JPEG

RAW FILE
• not an image file per se (it will require special software to view, though this software is easy to get).
• typically a proprietary format (with the exception of Adobe’s DNG format that isn’t widely used yet).
• at least 8 bits per color – red, green, and blue (12-bits per X,Y location), though most DSLRs record 12-bit color (36-bits per location).
• uncompressed (an 8 megapixel camera will produce a 8 MB Raw file).
• the complete (lossless) data from the camera’s sensor.
• higher in dynamic range (ability to display highlights and shadows).
• lower in contrast (flatter, washed out looking).
• not as sharp.
• not suitable for printing directly from the camera or without post processing.
• read only (all changes are saved in an XMP “sidecar” file or to a JPEG or other image format).
• sometimes admissable in a court as evidence (as opposed to a changeable image format).
• waiting to be processed by your computer.

JPEG FILE
• a standard format readable by any image program on the market or available open source.
• exactly 8-bits per color (12-bits per location).
• compressed (by looking for redundancy in the data like a ZIP file or stripping out what human can’t perceive like a MP3).
• fairly small in file size (an 8 megapixel camera will produce JPEG between 1 and 3 MB’s in size).
• lower in dynamic range.
• higher in contrast.
• sharper.
• immediately suitable for printing, sharing, or posting on the Web.
• not in need of correction most of the time (75% in my experience).
• able to be manipulated, though not without losing data each time an edit is made – even if it’s just to rotate the image (the opposite of lossless).
• processed by your camera.

Exposure Adjustments
Raw files can provide greater exposure adjustments than JPEG files; over 50% more exposure detail (depending on the sensor capabilities). When adjusting exposure in a JPEG file, the highlights and shadows gets clipped resulting in lower details.

When to use Raw or JPEG
There are pros and cons of both Raw and JPEG files and there are actually reasons other than file size why not to use Raw.
Use Raw if:
you need to post process the image the scene contains high contrast the image will be enlarged beyond the camera sensor's resolution the white balance cannot be properly set with the camera you can't decide whether to use Raw or JPEG Use JPEG if:
all the Raw files won't fit in your memory card you don't want to post process the image you want to develop the photos right away before you get to use a computer (some photo finishing labs still do not accept Raw files) you are using continuous shooting mode and want to take as many photos as you can before your camera's buffer is full
RAW + JPEG
Most cameras that support RAW files also support a mode called RAW+JPEG. This mode stores both images into the memory card so you get the best of both worlds. However, it takes longer to store a RAW and JPEG file into a memory card than just one Raw or JPEG file. Whenever you are using continuous shooting mode and need to capture a fast sequence of images, stick with JPEG or RAW.

Have you ever felt that sweet feeling everytime you look at your old photos from your childhood? Or just some pictures that brings you a lot of memories because it happened so long time ago? I bet everyone would feel that. Memories are good, aren't they? :)

Time shifts, places change, people change. But sometimes they don't. Sometimes only time changes, but the later two don't. And sometimes time and people change; places don't.

It's good to see how everything has changed, yet still the same.

Interclub Bowling Tournament 2011

Yesterday, as in Friday, 17th of June 2011, a bowling tournament for the clubs and societies in Uniten was held. It was organized by MPP, HEP, and Uniten Bowling Club. The event took place at The Mines Seri Kembangan, from 3 p.m to 6 p.m.

Each club was required to send in 4 players, and our players are Mohd Syafiq, Iylia Millatina, Mohd Ashwan and Efi Fathy. And our result? *drum rolls*

We won the 8th place out of 22 clubs that competed. And our very own Iylia Millatina won the 2nd place for best woman player category! Congratulations guys! Even though we didn't make it to the Top 3, but we know we did our best. :)

The Beauty of Bokeh

So beautiful, aren't they? Bokeh, are those. :)

What actually is bokeh? Bokeh is actually derived from the word "boke", a Japanese word for "blurred." According to The Online Photographer:

"Bokeh" simply means blur, specifically out-of-focus blur (as opposed to the kinds caused by subject or camera movement). It includes, but is not limited to, out-of-focus highlights.

Hello Halo

Hi all! Based on the previous post (Light Graffiti), we have found one cool thing that could really make you feel like you're doing graffiti. Introducing... *drum rolls* HALO!

Quoted from the website:

"Halo is a handy light-writing tool, preserving the techniques and gestures that graffiti artists use with spray cans. It is possible to change the color and the brightness of the led to change the graffiti’s styles. If the light doesn’t have enough battery, users simply have to shake it to have energy again."

Halo is designed by Aissa Logerot, a designer who is currently based in Paris.

The perks of Halo:
- the light's brightness can be changed
- the colours can be changed too, by replacing the cap
- when the power goes off, shake the can to recharge the energy

A spray paint can that produces LED light. How cool is that? Now we can vandalize the whole town without getting caught. ;D

LIGHT GRAFFITI part 1

Awesome, aren't they? That is what we call LIGHT GRAFFITI. It's one of the favourite techniques by photographers, and everyone has to try at least once doing it because it is too awesome to be missed! Other name for light graffiti is light drawing, light art, or light writing. Basically, light graffiti is about creating/drawing an object/writings on the air, to produce something that is not there but makes it appear as if the object is there, by using lights (you can also do it in Adobe Photoshop but of course, that's not the case here!). How to make light graffiti? Read on.

THINGS YOU NEED:

1) Lights. Any kind of lights will do. Torchlight, camera phone back lights, camera phone flash light, LED, firecracker, you name it. You can use different colour of lights too.

2) A camera with manual setting - preferably DSLR. A high-end compact camera would do, but of course, what you can do is pretty limited.

3) A tripod. To create a beautiful output, the camera needs to stand still. No sign of Parkinson pls. :P

LET'S DO IT:

1) Go somewhere dark or a place where the lighting is poor. The darker the better, as it will create a sharper and more detailed light graffiti.

2) Put your camera on the tripod and adjust it well on a flat surface to make sure that it will not move.

3) Set the ISO level down to 200 or 100 or lower, if possible. This is to reduce noise in the picture.

4) Set the aperture to a very small value. F18 and above is good enough. Make sure the flash is off.

5) Press the shutter button, and start moving the lights in front of the camera. If you want yourself to be in the picture, you can't move the whole time while drawing the lights on the air.

6) Now wait for the picture to be processed, and you're done! :)

As usual, practice makes perfect. You can experiment with different settings and different lightings to see the outcome. This can make you understand more of the requirement needed for certain drawings that you want to do, and produce a better picture next time. Don't be lazy! Nobody excels with only one try. Maybe you can produce a short stop motion clip like this too? ;)

Workshop - How to Shoot a Model

Setelah lebih dari satu semester Shutters berehat daripada mengadakan apa-apa jenis bengkel, kali ini Shutters kembali dengan bengkel "How to Shoot a Model" iaitu pada 20 Mei 2011 di antara jam 2.30-6.00 petang. Ianya telah dihadiri oleh 10 orang AJK Shutters dan 20 orang peserta.

Pengisian bengkel telah diberikan oleh senior Shutters sendiri, Wan Ahmad Faris yang berpengalaman selama 6-7 tahun dalam bidang fotografi.

Terima kasih kepada kawan-kawan yang sudi datang mengutip ilmu. Harap-harap yang menyimpan impian nak beli kamera tu, impian mu tercapai.

AJK Shutters, Mohd Ashwan sedang memberi penerangan kepada peserta international. (President Shutters kata, "ash naik gaji" woah!)

Wajah-wajah kepayahan untuk memahami 'bahasa photography'. Takpe bro, chillex.

Keterujaan peserta teserlah untuk memulakan sesi praktikal. Tapi abang baju merah buat-buat tak excited pulak.

Faris sedang mengajar peserta tentang teknik yang betul mengambil gambar model. Awesome la Abang Faris ni.

UNITEN CLUBS & SOCIETIES BAZAAR MAY 2011

Salam and hi to you, you, you, and you. As in, everyone lah, haha. :D

On Wednesday 18th May and Thursday 19th May of 2011, Uniten Clubs & Societies Bazaar was held again at Upten Food Court. The aim of the bazaar is to introduce and make known of all the clubs available in Uniten to all students, especially the ones who have just registered as a Uniten student this semester intake. A lot of activities have been conducted at the main stage with the entertaining emcee, and the bazaar was a very successful one. Congratulations from Shutters to the MPP for the great event! :)

Let's move on to our own booth. Even though the booth for Shutters was placed at a pretty "lonely" place :P, we managed to get quite a lot of visits and registrations from the students. Apart of registration, we were also selling the Shutters casual t-shirt "Make Photos Not War" and promoting our first workshop for the semester: "How To Shoot A Model" which was held the day after the bazaar ended (Friday; 20th May). Those who stopped by were mostly friendly and smiley with high curiosity, you guys are so fun to deal with! Oh yea, we have also been visited by Shutterbug! Shutterbug is our neighbour KLIUC's photography club. Thank you for coming! :)

Therefore, to our new members and not to be forgotten old members, we have prepared a lot of activities for you guys this semester. Do check out our Facebook for updates.

DIY Flash Filter.

Hi Shutters people, this post will be teaching you on how to make your own flash filter, with a low cost :)
This DIY (Do-It-Yourself) flash filter can add the excitements and dramas (!) of your pictures as you go wild experimenting on the colours of the flash. Feeling eager? Come let's learn how to make your own flash filter.

First, what you need is coloured sheets of plastics.

Next, cut them to pieces (to a size that suits your flash well).

And put them on your flash (you can even put them in front of your lens).

And SHOOT! :D

So, here are my own flash filter, which I did myself.

And these are the results!

'Wow' Factor in Potraits.

In capturing good photos, it is all about using good techniques. That is why we need to keep learning; sharpening our skills so that we can master each and every techniques so well, so that when the time comes, we can capture it beautifully, before sharing it with the world to see. And making other people jealous of the coolness of the photo. :P

There are lots of categories in photography, but today we're gonna have a look at... Potraits! Potraits has been one of the top photography techniques that photographers love to use. We capture body language, emotion, facial expression, moments, et cetera. Have you ever felt gloomy, or so happy, or even smile, or laugh, when you look at potraits of people (even if that's a photo of some random strangers)? Have you ever felt that? Have you? Have youu? We bet you have. Well, that's what we call a good photo. It communicates with the viewer; it delivers the feeling of the people in the photo and the atmosphere of the scene.

Now, let's go straight to the point. How to take good potraits? Read on!

1. ALTER YOUR PERSPECTIVE

Alter your perspective! Forget the eye-level angle, get a chair and capture a photo of someone while standing on it, or get down on the floor and lie down on your side and capture, or stand at the back of the subject and capture. Try to think of different angles and perspectives, probably from the view of a lizard that is resting on your fan... or something.

2. PLAY WITH EYE CONTACT

Having the subject looking at the lens is a good way, but we can also have the eyes off the lens to create a good impact. This create the feeling of candidness, which could be more intriguing.

3. BREAK THE RULES OF COMPOSITION

Creativity has no limitations, we can always bend the rule! Forget the rule of third for a while, and try to experiment with other compositions. Naughty catchphrase that you might have heard: "Those who obey all the rules, will miss all the fun" so grab your camera and have fun snapping with any way you want.

4. EXPERIMENT WITH LIGHTING

Join force with the nature and create a beautiful potraits with lightings. Lighting can create the mood of the picture - happy, sad, anxious, angry, etc. The more you do it, the more familiar with lighting you become, and the more you know how to use lighting to create the mood of your pictures, the better the outcome.

5. MOVE YOUR SUBJECT OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE

Now, have you ever browsed through an album that consists of someone's portraiture, with only one angle and one expression? Hint hint: top view, coy smile? Hint hint: MySpace picture? ;P

How would you say to that..

But anyway. The point is, having a random, unusual pose will definitely make a better picture. Have your subject do something that is not normal or silly, such as jumping, twisting their bodies, playing rockstar, making silly faces, or any other unique poses, will surely make the picture stand out.

6. SHOOT CANDIDLY

See someone yawning so wide it cracks you up? Or a toddler pinching the nose of his father? Or someone walking absent-mindedly in the park? Freeze the moment. Candid is always, always good. Plus, the subject does not have the 'pressure' to think of a pose, so the picture will come out so naturally and real.

7. INTRODUCE A PROP

Have an object in your picture alongside with your subject, might create a sense of story, which will make the picture interesting.

8. FOCUS ON ONE BODY PART (GET CLOSED UP)

The less we show, the more mysterious it becomes. We could capture only certain body part of the subject and leave the viewer to interpret the picture themselves.

9. OBSCURE PART OF YOUR SUBJECT

Which means, have your subject zoomed in closely to focus at only one part, while the other part is covered/hide. We can do this by using clothes, objects, or even the subjects body parts such as hands, or hair.

10. TAKE SERIES OF SHOTS

Switch your camera into 'burst' or 'continuous shots' to capture more than one picture at a time. This technique is great tobe used on an active subject, as we can see the continuous transformation of the activity that the subject is doing.

Uniten Club & Societies Bazaar for Nov Intake 2010

On Wednesday 15 December 2010, the university's annual Clubs & Societies Bazaar has been held. The event took place at Upten food court with lots of clubs and societies participated. It was great to see each and every club with their booth decoration and activities to promote the club to the students, especially the new intakes.

As for Shutters, it was such a joyful night. Many students stopped by to get to know more about Shutters and registered as a member. Big thanks! Watch out for our upcoming events alright. :)

Not to forget, Shutters has also won the Best Booth award during the night! It was a tie with UNICS, and we had to do the big scream to be selected as the winner, where for the club who has the biggest scream between the two will be announced as the winner. However, since both Shutters and UNICS's scream has the same decibel, we had to send in people from each club for a short secret interview with the MC. And guess what? WE WON! :D

Coretan AGM 2010/2011 Uniten Shutters

Assalamualaikum dan Selamat Sejahtera.

Pada 22 September 2010 Uniten Shutters telah mengadakan satu Perjumpaan Tahunan atau dikenali sebagai AGM (Annual General Meting) bertempat di COE (College of Engineering) tingkat 2. Seramai lebih kurang 40 orang ahli baru, AJK baru dan AJK lama menyertai perjumpaan tersebut. Perjumpaan yang diadakan secara tidak formal itu membuatkan perjalanan majlis berjalan lebih santai dan chill.

Majlis pada malam itu dipengerusikan oleh saudara Ifkar Azmi (echo) yang sangat meletup cara pembawaannya supaya majlis tampak lebih santai dan ringan. Kemudian doa dibaca oleh saudara Syafiqjay bagi merahmati dan memberkati majlis. Memetik sedikit doa yang dibaca oleh beliau, beliau mendoakan supaya kelab Shutters akan terus bertapak di bumi Uniten dan terus maju. Diharapkan doa yang diaminkan oleh lebih kurang 40 orang itu diperkenankan oleh Allah S.W.T. Amin~

Kemudian majlis diserahkan pula kepada saudara Syafiq (kamek) yang telah membentangkan kesemua program yang telah berjaya dianjurkan oleh kelab Shutters semenjak bertapaknya Shutters di Uniten sejak tahun 2007 hingga sekarang. Diteruskan pula dengan memperkenalkan kepada ahli-ahli baru tugas, cabang dan AJK yang berjuang di dalam setiap biro. Bermula dengan memperkenalkan biro Program oleh saudara Syafiq (kamek), kemudian biro Publication oleh saudari Amirah (meah), biro Promotion oleh saudari Rabiha dan akhir sekali perkenalan biro Public Relation oleh saudara Najib.

Pengerusi kemudiannya memanggil setiap AJK lama yang pada malam itu kesemuanya sendondon memakai t-shirt rasmi kelab Shutters berwarna hitam yang menayangkan tulisan 'capture the moment capture the soul' di belakangnya. Seorang demi seorang AJK lama, seramai 17 orang kesemuanya, memperkenalkan diri masing-masing secara santai dan ditambah dengan seloroh secara spontan oleh masing-masing. Tepukan yang gemuruh telah diberikan kepada cik President Shutters, saudari Hassuifah (cipah yang hot) tatkala beliau ke depan untuk memperkenalkan diri.

Kami amat bertuah pada malam itu kerana mendapat kunjungan tidak rasmi dan tidak disangka-sangka oleh wakil MPP UNITEN, saudara Mahlil yang berkesempatan berAGM sebentar bersama kami dan menyampaikan sedikit ucapan. Ya, kami menuntut hak kami untuk beraktiviti dalam suasana yang lebih nyaman. Sekalung penghargaan Uniten Shutters kepada saudara Mahlil atas kunjungan tersebut.

Seterusnya majlis diserahkan kepada saudara Faiz dan saudari Hamim membentangkan takwin Shutters sepanjang semester (sem 1 10/11) ini dan semester hadapan (sem 2 10/11). Antara aktiviti yang telah dijalankan pada semester ini adalah Briser la Glace (Ice-breaking) bersama ahli-ahli baru dan majlis Phototalk: Sharing Experience with Zainal Halim anjuran bersama kelab SAQ (Sahabat Al-Quran) UNITEN. Dan antara beberapa aktiviti yang dirancang untuk dijalankan adalah seperti Photography Outing sekitar Selangor dan Kuala Lumpur juga Lensa Kacha iaitu satu bengkel fotografi dan banyak lagi.

Ahli-ahli Shutters juga diberi kesempatan untuk memberikan cadangan serta padangan atau sebarang pertanyaan dan komen tentang aktiviti Shutters. Ramai yang telah melontarkan cadangan brilliant untuk Shutters adakan pada masa hadapan. Terima kasih Shutters ucapkan atas segala cadangan anda.

Kesemua AJK baru Shutters juga diperkenalkan pada malam itu. Wajah-wajah baru dan segar yang bagi kami sangat berpontensi untuk membangunkan Shutters dan menjadi pelapis baru (juga kuli baru) sangat kami hargai. Semoga kalian bahagia bersama kami, ber-chillin bersama kami. Selamat datang keluarga baru kami!

Majlis pada malam dijamu dengan hidangan ringan yang disediakan oleh Izzat Corner. Kemudian acara penutup turun temurun yang wajib kami adakan adalah sesi group photo di tangga!

Bagi kami, Perjumpaan kali ini disimpulkan sebagai sesuatu yang luar biasa kerana jumlahnya lebih ramai daripada sebelumnya. Sekalung tahniah diucapkan kepada semua AJK yang bertungkus lumus menjayakan AGM pada kali ini dan juga berpenat lelah bagi memastikan Shutters terus berdiri di bumi UNITEN. Serantai penghargaan buat semua AJK baru yang sudi untuk merasa perit jerih berdiri bersama kami membangunkan Shutters pada masa akan datang dan pada semua yang hadir pada malam itu, TERIMA KASIH dan JUMPA LAGI!! Teruslah beraktiviti bersama kami.

Yesterday, on Wednesday 25th August 2010, Shutters Uniten has organized a breaking fast session. It was originally planned to be held at Red Wok, Section 7, Bandar Baru Bangi, but due to some reasons that could not be avoided, the venue was changed to Oasis Cafe, Section 7, Bandar Baru Bangi.

Salam and hello to everyone. Terribly sorry for the terribly terribly long absence! :[

But anyways, here we would like to update on the last event - the event collaborated by Sahabat Al-Quran Uniten(SAQ), Kelab Pembina, and yours truly, Uniten Shutters. :D

PhotoTalk with Zainal Halim

The event took place at Uniten Mosque on Saturday, 31st of July 2010. More than 30 people has registered and came to expand their knowledge in photography by our great photography guru, Mr. Zainal Halim.

Lots of information, techniques, and tricks has been shared by Mr. Zainal, and lots of questions has been asked and answered, which made the day even more beneficial for each and everyone that came. Mr. Zainal has been really helpful to clear the questions that have been lingering in the heads of the attendees, and even shared his wonderful stories and experiences that he has gained during his days as a photojournalism photographer.

Seriously, for those who didn't came to this talk, you have missed. A lot. :3

The day is ended by giving the certificates to each participants and a photography session with Mr. Zainal Halim. It is, indeed, a day to be remembered. :)

Salam and hi everyone! Welcome back to Uniten! Phew, look at that. How long have we been silent? Hehehe. So hopefully everyone has enjoyed their 3 months of holiday, special sem, or internship.

Anyways. New semester has started, new spirit is skyrocketing high. So are we! We, Shutters have planned lots of activities that will be, insyaAllah, held during the new academic year of 2010/2011.

There are a few adjustments have been made in Shutters, especially in the organization chart. Our president, Solehah Mohd Sabri is no longer in Uniten. We will always be missing you. :')

Hi everyone! As you all already know, Shutters Uniten is organizing a photography competition called OneSnap Competition Vol. II.

Just to remind you that the LAST DATE to submit your photos is on 28th DECEMBER 2009, which is THIS COMING MONDAY.

You can submit your pictures at our booth... in COE & COIT. You don't need to print the pictures! just send us the softcopy (in CD). Easy!

Other reminder:

-photos submitted for the competition will be displayed during the exhibition soon.

-prizes will be given at the prizes-giving ceremony at 30th December 2009 (Wednesday) at DK2, 8-11pm.

Terms & Condition for Onesnap Competition:

1) Penyertaan adalah terbuka kepada semua warga UNITEN (pelajar/pekerja).
2) Yuran penyertaan adalah sebanyak RM 5 bagi ahli dan RM 10 bagi bukan ahli. Peserta
dibenarkan menghantar seberapa banyak penyertaan, namun hanya layak memenangi
hadiah bagi salah satu penyertaan sahaja.
3) Penyertaan hendaklah dihantar secara ‘softcopy’ iaitu dalam bentuk CD.
4) CD yang digunakan untuk menghantar penyertaan disediakan sendiri oleh peserta.
5) Penyertaan mestilah mengikut tema yang telah ditetapkan. Penyertaan yang tidak
mengikut tema akan ditolak.
6) Peserta bebas menggunakan apa sahaja jenis kamera; baik DSLR, kamera digital, kamera telefon bimbit, dan lain-lain.
7) Pemenang akan dinilai melalui nilai estetika gambar, keaslian, ketepatan mengikut tema

Introducing the gimp

GIMP.. unlike picasa, it is more in-depth and has a more professional "tweaking" function similar to photoshop.. why not just get photoshop? why? because Gimp is free!!.. you can get your own gimp software at www.gimp.org (for mac and linux) or http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html (for windows). once installed, when u start up the gimp, i will feel odd: it doesn't particularly look or behave like a normal windows application. You're presented with a free-floating toolbar palette and a floating window-known as a "dialogue" in gimp terms (which at odd with the usual definition in the world of windows).. to be honest, i gave up on the gimp for weeks and let it dust at the bottom of my desktop because of its unusual presentation and occasionally quirky menu behavior, but once you get used to it (perseverance is very important) you'll quickly come to like the huge amount of power and potential that it has on tap.. it takes time to learn the ways of the Gimp, but it is worth your time and it doesn't cost anything.

Sometimes, we need to do some editing to create a picture that we would consider as beautiful. Especially when you are using a normal or low-quality camera (not DSLR which has lots of functions) to capture a photo. The noise, the paleness, the blur; eh booooring. So usually we would resort to editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, to enhance the quality of the picture.

But hey, do you know that there is another way to edit a picture? Especially to those who do not know how to use Photoshop, which requires quite some time of exploring and trying and clicking here and there to be good at it.

So basically what you have to do is, upload a photo and start editing the picture straight away!

In the tab EDIT:
auto-fix, rotate, crop, resize, exposure colours, etc. (the basics)

In the tab CREATE:
There will be lots of features that you could use. Under this tab you could put in effects, stickers, texts, frames, and so much more. So what's the keyword to know and to learn all features? EXPLORE!
(p.s. there will be some features that are only available for Premium Users, but it's alright. the free features are da bombs already)

So there, Picnik makes it easy-peasy as ABC and 123. Upload, edit, save. Hey, now who would say, "I don't know how to edit a picture"? ;)

Festival Seni Uniten

From 29 July to 31 July of 2009, Uniten was having a 'Festival Seni Uniten'.
We couldn't make it for the first two days as everyone should know, on Wednesday, Shutters held it AGM and on Thursday, most of Uniten's students attend the ISLB/ISLF class.

So, we went to FSU on Friday night but we were quite late and missed some of the performance.

It is normal for people to use image editing tools software such as Adobe Photoshop to manipulate images; creating out-of-your-mind pictures such as... being chased by a crocodile in the middle of a swamp, or flying through the sky like Superman, while actually the pictures are Photoshop-ed; by cutting and pasting a picture onto the other. Right? Riiight?

Introducing LI WEI, a photographer from China who doesn't need any software to create mind-blowing pictures. His concept is: to defy the gravity.

Li Wei uses cables, wires, some acrobatic techniques and good positioned cameras to help him achieving the desired work.

Hmm, any challengers? :P

Last Monday on 22/9, we from SHUTTERS held a "Berbuka Puasa Bersama-sama" session with some of SHUTTERS members. Thanks to everyone who joined us, we really appreciate it. Here are the tentative of the event.

7 Things Photoshop Does Automatically

1 Auto Color

Image > Adjustments > Auto Color or [Ctrl + Shift + B]
For those of us that are professionals in the color-correcting field, this is a great feature to sometimes fix the poor colors a digital camera can capture. This isn’t a perfect fix for all photos all the time, but it can usually get you pointed in the right direction.

2 Auto Levels

Image > Adjustments > Auto Levels or [Ctrl + Shift + L]
This is another quick way to do some minor color-correcting on your images. What this does is correct the black point and white point in your image automatically. It’s looking for the nearest-to-white color and setting that as the white point, then finding the nearest-to-black.

3 Auto Contrast

Image > Adjustments > Auto Contrast or [Ctrl + Alt + Shift + L]
Auto contrast is another quick adjustment for Photoshop to automatically color correct your image. You usually don’t need to use this with Auto Levels, but sometimes it helps for images that look a bit more washed-out than you’d like.

4 Auto-Align Layers

Edit > Auto-Align Layers
This feature is pretty cool as it attempts to align the content on your layers as close as Photoshop can figure out. When you run this command you’ll get a set of options as to how you want Photoshop to try to align. You’ll need to have your layers selected in the Layers palette by Ctrl-clicking or Shift-clicking on the layers. This is pretty much your savior for stitching together panoramas.

5 Auto-Blend Layers

Edit > Auto-blend Layers
Like Auto-Align, this feature is probably most useful in photography situations. When stitching together a panorama, it will attempt to match and blend the color across all of your layers to make sure your stitch looks seamless.

6 Vertical + Horizontal Centering (and other alignment)

Layer > Align > (options)...
This one is great when mocking up a new website design. This will allow you to align things vertically and horizontally to the center, left, right and top. Make sure your text layer is higher in your layers palette than the one you want to align with. Click on both layers by control-clicking or shift-clicking.

6.5 Vertical + Horizontal Centering (to a selection)

Layer > Align to Selection > (options)...
If you don’t have another layer you want to align something to, you can make a section and align your object to the selection. Just make sure the layer you want to align is selected in the Layers palette before going to the Layer menu.

7 Straighten Crooked Photos

Unlike the other actions in this article, this one takes a few more steps. You’ll want to start with the Ruler tool (located under the Eyedropper [I]) and draw a line for your horizontal axis to be straightened. After drawing your line, go to Image > Rotate Canvas > Arbitrary. Photoshop will have automatically entered the the angle in degrees needed to straighten your image, so just click OK. After running this you will have white areas in the corners, so be prepared to crop a bit.

I know that it's been a while since the Blog is available for us, but now only comes to mind to put some articles about Basic Photography.. of course, many of you can just start googling the "Manual of Photography", but in this post, I really want to share with you some useful articles for those who are currently have no idea about photography at all *like me*!

1. Begginer's Guide to Manual Photography - http://www.thetechlounge.com/article/287

when I read this article, it was actually almost the same material on what has been taught during our photography talk back then (referring to Dari Lensa Kacha : Kolaborasi Seni dan Teknologi program). It explain briefly about shutter speed, aperture, ISO.. you can just read through this article.. not much, only 6 pages!

2. Aperture Digital Photography Fundamentals (Manual) - http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Aperture_Photography_Fundamentals.pdf

this article (well, manual book to be exact! *since it contains 47 pages*) explains the details of basic photography that people need to know. It focused on how the digital cameras capture image and how digital images are displayed. A very interesting article for those who need something to kill their time and perhaps curious about photography in a bit detail.

Well, I think that's all that I can share currently.. If there're some things I discovered later I would like to share it with you all again...
